Friday, 16th of August would go down the history as a day of market mayhem. The rupee was left battered and bruised by the wayside on the global currency-bahn , gasping for breath. We do have the resilience and would bounce back, there is no doubt. But this tragedy striking us barely a day after the PM addressed the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort trying to reassure the nation on fast track economic recovery and stabilization, is quite unfortunate.
The FM observes, ‘Indian market need not be too sensitive to US market sentiments; rather it should react to our own’. One is not quite sure how that kind of selective reaction could be possible in a unipolar world with USA on the lead. Let us admit it though we don’t like to. Not only the US happenings but any economic event anywhere like the Euro Greek tragedy or the pathetic downfall of Cyprus would impact us and other developing, rather fast developing nations.
Whatever be the cause for yesterday’s fiasco, any knee jerk reaction will result in a domino effect which further will weaken the economy. The rumor that Foreign Institutional Investors will be restricted from repatriating their investment and the returns is one such dangerous and callous response, whoever be there behind spreading such canards.
We can’t afford to lose the entire foreign investment at this critical stage. Let RBI do the reassuring in words and through taking necessary steps to regulate and de-regulate. We in these 66 years after independence have never placed any control on foreign capital leaving the country and shall not do so in future too.
A request to politicians of all hues and leanings – keep your damn mouth shut. This is not the time to demonstrate your one-up-man-ship whoever you are.

இது இரண்டு நாள் முன்பு நடந்தது. ‘விஸ்வரூபம்’ நாவல் படித்த என் மலையாளத் தமிழ் நண்பர் தொலைபேசினார் – என்ன கௌரியம்ம நாவல்லே வந்திருக்காங்களே.
எண்ணூறு பக்க நாவலில் கௌரியம்மா ஒரு நிமிடம் தோன்றி மறைகிற கதாபாத்திரம். கௌரியம்மா? கௌரி தாமஸ்.மார்க்சிஸ்ட் கட்சி மூத்த தலைவராக இருந்து இடதுசாரி முன்னணி அமைச்சரவைகளில் அங்கம் வகித்தவர். அவர் கணவர் காலம் சென்ற தாமஸ் இந்திய கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சி.
கௌரி தாமஸ் கட்சியிலிருந்து விலக்கப்பட்டு, தனிக் கட்சி தொடங்கி, காங்கிரஸ் தலைமை உம்மன்சாண்டி அரசில் அமைச்சராக இருந்தார் (ஏழு வருடம் முன்). தற்போது வயது தொண்ணுறு.
1938-ல் நடக்கிற நாவல் நிகழ்ச்சியில் வரும் உப கதாபாத்திரம் கௌரி தாமஸ் என்பது கேரள அரசியல் வ்ரலாறும் முன்னணிகளின் பின்னணி தெரிந்தவர்களுக்கு மட்டும் புரியும். அது புரியாவிட்டாலும் பாதகமில்லை. நாவல் படிக்கத் தடையேதும் இல்லை.
கௌரியம்மயை மட்டும் கண்டு பிடிச்சீங்களே.. ஏகேஜி (தோழர் ஏ.கே.கோபாலன்) கூட வர்றாரே.. தட்டுப்பட்டாரா?
நான் கேட்க, நண்பர் இல்லையே என்றார்.
அம்பலப்புழை படகுத் துறையில், ‘நாளைக்கு பிணறாயியில் கட்சிக் கூட்டம் இருக்கு’ என்று சொல்லிப் போவார் நாவல் கதாபாத்திரம்.
ஏகேஜி கௌரியம்மயை திருமணம் செய்ய விரும்பியதாகவும் ஆனால் கௌரியம்ம தோழர் தாமஸ் மேல் ஏற்கனவே நேசம் கொண்டிருந்ததால் திருமணத்துக்கு சம்மதிக்கவில்லை என்றும் மாத்ருபூமி விரிவான ஆராய்ச்சிக் கட்டுரை எழுதிய நேரத்தில் நான் உருவாக்கிய அத்தியாயத்தில் இந்த இருவரும் வந்தார்கள்.
நாவல் எழுதுவதில் இதெல்லாம் சின்னச் சின்ன சந்தோஷங்கள்.

எதெதற்கோ டெக்னாலஜி. காலையில் பத்திரிகையைத் திறந்தால் பொலபொல என்று உள்ளே இருந்து உதிர்கிற பிஸ்ஸா கடை, சைவ – அசைவ உணவகம், உரகடத்தில் பட்ஜெட் அப்பார்ட்மெண்ட் இப்படி கலர் கலராக அடித்த பிட் நோட்டீசுகளை (பிட் இலலை, பேப்பரை விட பெரிய சைஸ் – மடிச்சு வச்சுருக்காங்க பாவிகள்) உள்ளே செருகாமல் செய்ய யாராவது வழி செய்யக்கூடாதா?
ஓப்பன் சைடிலும் ரெண்டு ஸ்டாப்ளர் பின் அடித்து அனுப்பலாம் என்று சொல்லி ஒரு மாதிரி – ஒரே மாதிரி புத்தகங்களை நினைவு படுத்துவதைத் தவிர்க்கவும்.
