Tamil writer’s latest work critiqued

Chennai: “Era Murugan has the influence of writer Sujatha in his novels, as he portrays them with more visualisation in a racy style,” said writer and drama artiste, Krishna Prasad, also known as Chithan, during his disquisition about the book ‘Duplex Veedhi’ by writer Era Murugan, at the 25th meet of ‘Thamizh Puthaga Nanbargal’ held here yesterday.
The 25th monthly meet of Tamizh Puthaga Nanbargal, a forum for Tamil readers initiated by the president of Tag Centre, Alwarpet, R T Chari, and supported financially by his family trust, Ramu Endowment, saw the review of the book ‘Duplex Veedhi’ by Era Murugan, who has authored many novels, including ‘Vishwaroopam’, ‘Moondru Viral’, ‘Arsoor Vamsam’, etc.
“This is said to be a bio-fictional story, but how much of it is fiction remains a question. I feel about 80 per cent of the story is only fictional, and Era Murugan has portrayed the life of a teenager in the 1970s very effectively,” said Krishna Prasad.
“Though I hail from a small town near Tamilnadu-Kerala border, I was lucky enough to have some great Tamil writers and poets teach in my college. To name a few, poet Meera, who was a pioneer in ‘puthu kavithaigal’, writer Darmarajan, who was translated a lot of Soviet literature into Tamil, were my professors,” recalled Murugan.
He said though initially he was drawn only towards writing poetry -these were published in many Tamil magazines – he started writing short stories only in the 1980s. “I directly approached writer Ashokamitran, handed over some of my short stories and asked him to review them. I had the guts to do it at the time and to my surprise, when I met him a week later, he said the stories were impressive,” said Murugan.
The forum had also organised an event on 7 June to honour two great Tamil writers, Dr Indira Parthasarathy and Ashokamitran, with lifetime achievement awards and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each. The event saw former Union Minister P Chidambaram participate as chief guest.

நான் கல்கியில் நிறைய எழுதிய 1990-களில் கையால் ஏ-4 தாளில் மூன்று பக்கம் வருமாறு கதையோ, கட்டுரையோ எழுதிப் பழகி இருந்தது. சுருங்கச் சொல்லி விளங்க வைக்க அது நல்ல பயிற்சியாக இருந்தது. இறுக்கமான சொல்லாடல் உள்ள புதுக் கவிதையில் இருந்து சிறுகதைக்குப் போனதால் அந்தச் சொற்சுருக்கம் தானே வசப்பட்டது.
இப்போது கல்கியில் அபூர்வமாகவே எழுதுகிறேன். எனினும் லேப்டாப்பில் எழுதுவதால், 600 சொற்கள் என்று வரையறை செய்து கொள்ள வேர்ட் கவுண்ட் இருக்கிறது. கால்வீசி நடப்பது போல் நிறைய எழுதிப் போகும் நாவலில் அமிழ்ந்ததால், 600-வார்த்தையில் சிறுகதையை முடிப்பது தான் சிரமமாக இருக்கிறது. திரும்பக் கவிதைக்குப் போகவேண்டும்
