RAMOJIUM is a mastodon of a novel with a roller coaster ride like narration, about Ramoji Rao, a Tamil speaking Maratha in Madras during 1940s and his charming wife Rathna Bai having an addiction to inhaling tobacco snuff powder.
From the 40s world of Quit India movement, second world war, air raids, bombing of Madras, evacuation, yellow journalism and south Indian cinema, the narrative takes a dive into 1930s Kumbakonam .
It then makes a crash landing into 1700s with Ramoji, a mouse trap vendor turned seafarer working under the great Maratha navy chieftain Kanoji Angare, taking up with the pirates of the Indian ocean and annihilating them all.
It flows further down to 1800s when Ramoji serves as a native –French language translator to monsieur Joseph Dupleix, the French Governor General of Pondichery and stages a Tamil ballet based on Ramayana.
Ramoji and Rathna encounter the beautiful and slender Bhuvana, the heart throb paramour of Ramoji through the space – time continuum and take the story not necessarily forward but back and forth in a quantum jump.
RAMOJIUM is a page turner with time appearing frozen as you leaf through its 600 odd pages, immersed in the extraordinary universe of Ramoji.
