பழந்தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் எனக்குப் புரியாதவள் ‘தாய்க் கிழவி’.
பிரபந்தங்களில் கணிகை ஆடல் அழகியாக இளவயதினளாகச் சித்தரிக்கப்படுவாள். அவளுடைய தாய், கிழவியாக, க்ரூபியாக இருப்பாள். பாட்டுடைத் தலைவனுடைய மனத்தைக் கவர்ந்து கைப் பொருளை இழக்க வைக்க அவள் தான் கணிகைக்கு வழி சொல்லித் தருவாள். பொருள் எல்லாம் போனபிறகு அவனை வீட்டை விட்டு இறக்கிவிட முன்முயற்சி எடுப்பவளும் இந்தத் ‘தாய்க் கிழவி’யே.
வர்ணனைகளை வைத்துப் பார்த்தால் கணிகைக்கு வயது சுமார் பதினைந்து இருக்கும். அவளுக்கு அம்மா ‘தாய்க் கிழவி’. தாராளமாக சிக்ஸ்டி ப்ளஸ் வயசு சொல்லலாம். ஆக தாய்க்கும் மகளுக்கும் வயசு வித்தியாசம் நால்பத்தஞ்சு.

இந்த ‘சிந்தனை’யின் நீட்சி, பழந்தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் மத்திய வயசுப் பெண்களே கிடையாதா? பேதையில் தொடங்கி, பேரிளம்பெண் தான் இளவயசின் கடைசி ப்ரமோஷன். அப்புறம் ஒரே கிரேட் தான் – கிழவி, மூதாட்டி, முதுபெண்..அப்படியா?

Ananthakrishnan Pakshirajan Thambi, you forget that life span during those days were less than 25. A woman became a Perilam Pen at the age of about 25. Repeated child-bearing ensured that. Also because of early marrriage, any woman above 35 was likely to be a Patti. My grandmother became a Patti at the age of 28. She was married at the age of 9 and her daughter was married at the age 10. -

Ananthakrishnan Pakshirajan No. That was a different story. The groom usually waited like a vulture to pounce on the girl as soon as she started menstruating. There were horrific cases of marriages being consummated before girls attained maturity.

Ananthakrishnan Pakshirajan This is the infamous Phulmonee case: In 1890, eleven year old Phulmonee died of marital rape by her twenty nine year old husband Hari Maiti. Her mother Radhamonee’s account of seeing her daughter lying in blood and succumbing to the injuries of forced intercourse paved the ground for the age of consent debate. Hindu norms mandated sexual intercourse on men when their child wives attain puberty and the colonial law only penalized marital rape when then the child wife was under the age of ten. Since Phulomonee was older, Hari Maiti was not accused of marital rape and murder and charged for rash acts [5]. However, this case pushed the colonial government to raise the age of consent for marriage of girls to twelve. More importantly this case raised questions whether families or communities had the right to inflict pain or suffering on women using the plea of tradition. Both these cases paved the ground for not only raising the age of marriage of girls but more importantly confront issues of choice and consent of women in marriage. These cases in the 19th century were precursors to later discussions and legal interventions on child marriages in 20th century in India.

Zinggy Taurean Having read some of these Sangam poems, I think Thai Kizhavi is a subtle reference to the Devadasi “Mother” and might not be the biological mother. This thought is further strengthened by the sort of tasks she does to help her “daughter” win over the ruler/thailaivan even if he is married many times over – an event that no real mother will allow her child to do! -

She suggested marriage to another woman other than Sita so that he does not sin in marrying his daughter/another man’s wife (based on which Ramayana you read). But I think Thai kizhavi sometimes does the job mentoring her women (like Baghyaraj’s Chinna Veedu mother of that “other” lady)
