Christopher Nolan took liberties in depicting Tesla as the inventor of the mostly illogical and idiotic contraption for ‘teleporting and cloning’, in an earlier movie of him, ‘Prestige’. Hollywood can portray a path breaking scientist in poor light with historical inaccuracies and get away with it. Even the severe to the core critics will excuse such over indulgence.
Tesla was the pioneer of Alternating current. Edison, his one time employer and foe thereon was wedded to Direct Current but as we observe all around us, it is A.C throughout, as the means of long distance power transmission and general use. A genius equal to Edison in stature, Tesla spoiled his name through his behaving idiosyncratically and died a pauper.
One has to be careful when embedding real historical characters into a fantasy that too if the story is set in recent past. Nolan portrays in an authentic manner post Victorian London but the magic, real magic I mean, keeps jutting out of the canvas. Teleportation is a hoax and never was practiced by anyone anywhere. The real magician in ‘Prestige’ is the Chinese old man. I simply love the scenes he moves a huge vase from one table to another with his ‘magical powers’. I watched the movie twice of course as it transports us to another world totally.
